Why We Do it

Our mission isn’t just environmental—it’s personal. It’s about giving residents the tools to reclaim space, build skills, and lead the future of their communities—one lot, one block, one story at a time.

Reclaiming Our Space

Our Mission

Groundwork Mobile County is focused on transforming neglected land in Africatown, Prichard, and Southside Mobile into healthy green spaces, vibrant community assets, and pathways for youth to lead in the restoration of their own neighborhoods.

Where We Work

Groundwork Mobile County concentrates its efforts in three areas with  deep potential: Africatown, Prichard, and Southside Mobile.

Prichard

TREES PLANTED LOCALLY

Tree planting efforts are helping to reduce heat and restore beauty in areas hit hardest by illegal dumping and blight. Streets near Wilson Avenue and Elm Street are seeing new growth

Africatown

BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT

These brownfields—once barriers to growth—are now being transformed into future assets like playgrounds, green corridors, and community gathering spaces

Southside

COMMUNITY GARDENS

In an area with limited access to fresh food and green space, Southside Mobile is seeing its first community gardens break ground. Raised beds, clean soil, and resident-led planting are turning vacant lots into assets that feed both body and block.
