Where We Work
Africatown, Prichard & Southside Mobile
Africatown
Africatown is sacred ground—built by survivors of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to enter the U.S., and sustained for generations by Black families who shaped its legacy. But decades of industrial development, environmental neglect, and underinvestment have left parts of Africatown burdened by blight and brownfields.

Redeveloping Africatown
Decades of industrial
Groundwork Mobile County is working alongside residents to reclaim the land. From soil testing to safe reuse planning, these efforts are turning yesterday’s dumping grounds into tomorrow’s playgrounds, walking trails, and gathering places.
Prichard
Downtown Prichard sits at the crossroads of history and possibility. Once a thriving corridor of local businesses, homes, and gathering spaces, much of this area now faces the weight of vacant lots, aging infrastructure, and environmental neglect.

Revitalizing Prichard
Downtown Prichard sits at the crossroads of history and possibility.
From clearing overgrown properties to preparing sites for public use, we’re working with residents, city leadership, and local youth to bring energy and investment back to the heart of the neighborhood.
Southside
In an area with limited access to fresh food and green space, Southside Mobile is seeing its first community gardens break ground. Raised beds, clean soil, and resident-led planting are turning vacant lots into assets that feed both body and block.

Reimagining Southside
Guided by Groundwork Mobile’s commitment to environmental equity and youth empowerment, these gardens do more than grow food—they grow community.
Local leaders are stepping up as stewards of their blocks, ensuring that this momentum is sustainable, inclusive, and deeply rooted in the needs of Southside residents.
